Crime Watch is now Community Watch
The Crime Watch Committee has been renamed and is now the Farmers Branch Community Watch Committee, with an expanded scope. One of the highest priorities expressed by City Council and residents of Farmers Branch is the redevelopment and revitalization of the central area of the City, geographically defined as being bordered by Stemmons Freeway on the west and Midway Road on the east. In April 2006, the City Council outlined six priorities associated with redevelopment and included redefining the charge of the Community Watch Committee to include code enforcement and other neighborhood revitalization efforts.
Community Watch Mission Statement
The mission of the Farmers Branch Community Watch Committee is to develop a sense of community spirit by promoting neighborhood safety and support through programs and activities in cooperation with the City of Farmers Branch.
Community Watch Functions
The Community Watch Committee is made up of a committee of Farmers Branch residents appointed by the City Council with the purpose of assisting in organizing and maintaining Community Watch neighborhoods including:
- Communicating with the City Council and staff concerning Community Watch activities and plans
- Communicating with the residents of Farmers Branch relative to Community Watch programs
- Organizing new Community Watch Neighborhoods
- Keeping current with the activities of individual neighborhood Community Watch programs in Farmers Branch and other cities
- Education of residents on residential property codes and working with City officials to seek compliance on code violations
The number of individuals willing and qualified to serve on the Committee far exceeds the number that can be appointed to the Committee. The City Council therefore encourages the Committee to provide opportunities and forums for active community participation.
As a Committee, appointed by the City Council, meetings of the Committee are subject to the Open Meetings Laws, and all meetings of the full Committee shall be properly posted in accordance with State Law. The City Secretary assists in such postings. A quorum does not need to be present to conduct business.
