Protect

“When you overhear from a Parkland doctor, ‘If I ever have a heart attack I hope I’m in Farmers Branch when it happens,’ you know you’re in capable hands with the FB Fire Department. Our Police Department is equally effective and highly visible. We have the deepest appreciation for the dedicated professionals we have looking out for us every hour of every day.”

The Environmental Health Division conducts a comprehensive mosquito control program which includes public education, property inspections, trapping mosquitoes across the City for identification and testing, treating stagnant water areas, and when necessary, spraying the City to reduce the number of mosquitoes.

Methods of Mosquito Control for Residents

  • Source Reduction – The most effective way of controlling mosquitoes is to eliminate breeding sites by:
    • Emptying all saucers underneath flowerpots
    • Changing the water in pet bowls and bird baths daily
    • Discarding old tires, or punching holes in the bottom of them so they don't retain water
    • Cleaning out leaf-clogged gutters
    • Maintaining swimming/kiddie pools, spas and fountains
    • Repairing leaky outdoor spigots or leaking air conditioner units
    • Keeping lawns, shrubs and bushes trimmed to deprive adult mosquitoes of harborage and resting areas
  • Exposure Reduction – Reduce exposure to biting mosquitoes by:
    • Eliminating all potential breeding sites on property
    • Treating permanent standing water sites such as ponds, water gardens or fountains by adding mosquito eating fish, or a commercially available mosquito control product such as mosquito dunks (available at most home and garden stores)
    • Providing temporary relief by using a commercially available shrub and bush spray that contains pyrethrin in areas around the yard that may be harboring adult mosquitoes
    • Avoid going outside between the hours of dusk and dawn
    • When outside, wear pants and long sleeves to minimize risk of being bitten
    • Wear mosquito repellant that contains DEET
    • Check all doors and windows for tight fitting screens that are in good repair
