Questions about breaker boxes? Call the City first

FARMERS BRANCH ~ Recently, there have been some exaggerated claims in the media about potentially dangerous electrical panels and breakers manufactured by Federal Pacific and by Zinsco. Farmers Branch Building Official Jim Olk did some research into the matter to see what he could determine.
Mr. Olk said that, initially, Underwriters Laboratory (UL) did list the “Stab-Lock” breaker manufactured by Federal Pacific. However, after Federal Pacific reported that a part in the breaker did not meet the UL standard, UL withdrew its listing of the product.
“Still, from my research, I cannot find any reports of increased fire instances due to these types of electrical equipment,” Mr. Olk explained. “The failure rates of these products are no more than those of any of the other electrical manufacturers. If these devices were installed to code and have been properly maintained they should be considered safe. I, personally, have a Zinsco panel in my house and have had no problems with it.”
He explained that if any Farmers Branch resident needs to upgrade their electrical service and decides to replace the electrical panel, regardless of the brand, they should be sure that to hire a licensed master electrician and that they obtain a permit and inspection from the City.
“The permit and inspection process is designed to protect the citizens of Farmers Branch by making sure that any electrical installation meets the minimum safety standards adopted by the City,” Mr. Olk concluded. “We work for your safety.” For more information, call 972.919.2549.
